IMT developed a new lighting product in conjunction with TAQA

TAQA´s strict HSSE regulations have resulted in a critical attitude towards all maintenance activities that need to be carried out at an altitude of over 2 metres. TAQA regulations stipulate scaffolding with rails as well as measures to prevent materials from falling. Moreover, employee competence is required, as a result of which licences need to be applied for.

TAQA has been using the IQL® maintenance-free lighting range based on the principle of induction ever since the company entered the Dutch market. As is well-known, these products last for more than 10 years, even when they burn 24/7.

However, for general lighting with an emergency lighting provision IMT offered luminaires of which changing the batteries was no simple task. As a result, higher costs would be incurred for the application of these types of luminaires in elevated positions. We therefore asked IMT to come up with a principle that ensured easy, quick and safe replacement of batteries using a stepladder.

The IMT R&D-team invited a number of colleagues for a brainstorm meeting, which supplied sufficient input to get to work. During the process, we were kept abreast of its progress and we were involved in a number of fundamental design decisions.

Within the calendar year IMT realized the adaptation, including an ATEX explosion proof certificate. For us at ATAQ enough reason to choose IQL® for our emergency lighting.

The lighting range is now being applied to all our Dutch operations, onshore as well as offshore. Based on our recent experiences regarding cooperation and product performance, we expect to use IMT products and systems more and more for other TAQA locations too.

We at TAQA Energy bv. are very environmentally conscious and always look for the best sustainable solution wherever and whenever possible, in particular concerning the maintenance of offshore installations, where logistic as well as labour costs are significant factors. Our choice for IQL® lighting over the existing TL versions is therefore a very conscious one. Furthermore, the 12 years of experience with this induction-based lighting and its proven reliability were decisive factors for us.

IMT illuminates Wintershall helidecks

"Wintershall produces oil and gas on the North Sea. It is our mission to be the operator of choice for our production partners and customers. Where other producers stop, we pump the oil fields as empty as possible at the lowest possible cost. This can only be effected if a production platform functions perfectly with the lowest possible amount of stops and shut downs. This is why it is necessary for us not to bother about issues that are not directly linked to production, such as the lighting. Therefore we apply as many IQL luminaires as possible. You install them and only by the time that a platform must be dismantled you take down the luminaires and use them again if necessary.

Most of our platforms are unmanned as a result of our far-reaching IT. If people visit an unmanned platform, the lighting must by all means function when switched on. This is the reason why all of our platforms are equipped with IQL lighting of IMT. AFter all, it never breaks down. Even under the extreme circumstances at sea, such as high humidity rate, vibrations, high temperature fluctuations, salt and UV radiation. Besides, we accomplish the same light output with less energy. The IMT navigation lighting is even so super clear, that it immediately catches the eye if you cross the North Sea by air.

Our oldest IQL luminaires, red obstruction lights from 1988, are still working, without any problems. The combination of adjusted "sealed for life" electronics, stainless steel and crystal glass makes IQL sustainable and reliable without equal. Maintenance is hardly necessary, which prevents dangerous situations trying to reach the luminaire and saves hugely on scaffolding and time. If we build or renovate a platform, we prefer to do it right the first time, because changes cost a lot of money. I wish that I had invented IQL myself. IMT is our operator of choice."

Intergem Coryton

Petroplus Oil Refinery (originally owned by BP) and their neighbour Intergen use IQL induction lighting since 2004. Due to the heavy production circumstances, both companies were constantly faced with maintenance and replacement of light sources, ballasts and even complete lighting systems. Besides, this work often had to be carried out by professional electricians, who could be employed more effectively elsewhere.

This is why the decision was made to replace the fluorescence lighting and other types of luminaires by IQL lighting. IQL is already applied for more than fifteen years in the oil & gas extraction industry and has proved its reliability there. To this day, the companies have not reported any defects, which means that the earn-back period of IQL lighting has been more than overstepped. Meanwhile IQL has become the standard for lighting for both companies.

In 2005 the IQL application of Intergen Coryton Power Station was proclaimed User Application of the Year by the magazine HazardEx. The award was granted for the use of IQL in the turbine halls with their extremely heavy production circumstances, such as vibrations.

"No more worries about lighting"

"Cerexagri produces plant protection products in Rotterdam for chemical and wholesale companies around the globe. Production takes place on a continuous basis in five shifts. As we supply lots of dry products, such as powders and granulates, there is always a risk of dust explosions. Therefore we have to meet very strict conditions for production and transport. This is why we apply EX zoning and we comply with the ATEX and ADR guidelines.

Safety and the environment are essential in our business operations. Besides, we strive to keep maintenance down as much as possible, because production always has priority. This is why the lighting must be explosion proof, corrosion proof and also maintenance free, but it must also have perfect lighting qualities and minimum mechanical failure. Even more so because many luminaires, such as the High Bay lights at the top of the warehouses and the mast luminaires on our premises, are difficult to reach. If then we have to replace a ballast or a light bulb three times per year with the help of an elevating platform, this costs a lot of money.

IQL lighting requires much less maintenance and energy, and this saves us costs. The luminaires are very robust and have an extremely long lifetime of 100,000 burning hours. This is why we replace all existing luminaires by IQL since 2000 as a standard procedure. Meanwhile tens of IQL luminaires have already been, of all models and in a range wattage. In the production hall, the filling machine hall, near the palletizer, the tank lorry loading, the loading platforms and ramps, and as area lighting. amongst other things.

Our professional colleague Arkema Rotterdam B.V. has meanwhile become totally enthusiastic about IQL, too. Not only because of the quality luminaires; the customer service by IMT is also excellent, and that is something that money cannot buy. Thanks to IMT we have no more worries about lighting, well, except for removing spiderwebs perhaps."
